Just because the STC is non-profit doesn't mean that they can't waive
conference fees and pay for the cost of printing handouts for speakers.

I've been involved with the Toronto Webgrrls (now Toronto Digital Eve). They
have an annual day-long career fair, for which there is a charge to attend.
This is a completely non-profit organization that doesn't charge dues, but
they still waive the fees for speakers, moderators, and volunteers. Not only
do they pay for the cost of printing handouts, but they even offer to
arrange to print the handouts, if the speaker can send the materials with
enough lead time.

Although I wouldn't expect the STC to pay hotel/travel/meal costs of
speakers, it does surprise me that they won't waive conference costs or pay
for handouts.
