That doesn't speak highly about the kind of organization the STC is. When
I hear that policy, I immediately assume that the STC is an organization
focused more on an inflated self-image and in lining its own pockets than
in enriching its members and providing a sense of community. My own
several years of membership in the STC (past tense, of course) don't
contradict that assumption at all.

Of course, they may have their reasons for nickel-and-diming their
members like that. The Boston Computer Society, for example, was the kind
of organization that really did enrich its members and provide a sense of
community, but they went out of business.
