<Sometimes it makes me furious when an interviewer says
"For a technical writer, your salary is great". >

Friends of mine who are programmers are told the same thing about their profession.

That statement is a business tactic intended to deflate your ego and ensure your passivity in a negotiation. They are going to try and pay you as little as possible.

Either that or your salary _is_ great. :>)

If you think you're underpaid then test the market. Send out some resumes. See if people are interested in your skills.

Clearly you are being interviewed on a regular basis. If you are always being told that your salary is high, then maybe it is.

<Isn't technical communication as complicated as anything else? How would you handle this?>

I'd bet that brain surgery isn't all that complicated to an experienced surgeon who has lopped off a few frontal lobes. :>)

Make sure that you understand the market for people with your skills. _Is_ your salary great? Be sure you know if it is or isn't so that you can objectively discuss the issue with interviewers. If you're not sure, then you haven't got much to discuss.
