Hi guys

Thanks to everyone who posted. You guys are great.

I think the best solution is to use 'opens.' This
seems to make best sense to me and avoids any
problems.

And yes, the reason my editor gave was indeed that
'appears' sounds like "something a ghost does." I
think those of you who wrote about the old thinking
that 'appears' is associated with a supernatural
event, and that 'there used to be a localization
concern' - that must have been her reasoning. However,
from what you guys have written, it seems that is
probably not a huge concern anymore.

Indeed, 'displays' needs an object (except in the case

of the funny example you guys gave!) so probably this
is not the best word to use either. If I did, I would
use '...the app displays the xxx window, and...' etc.

I am one who has a pet peeve about prohibiting the
passive voice. I do think in some cases it is
necessary and even preferable - but that is my bias. I
try to minimize it but I don't think it is verboten. I
fully respect those who think otherwise. Please don't
flame me! (except in private email)

It is interesting - on Scriptorium Publishing's site
(they have a style guide there) they write: "Appears:
use 'is displayed' instead of appears" - with no
explanation as to why. (http: //www.scriptorium.com).
But I am going to heed what you guys have said because
it makes better sense to me.

And to Sandra, I swear I checked the archives. I first
put in "displays" and clicked 'go' and then
"appears"'. and did the same thing. I didn't get any
hits. Perhaps you can help me with searches next time.

Mario
