CDRWs work fine. I use them regularly. Speed depends on the amount of data
to backup and the speed of the drive you purchase. I've never used a Zip, so
I have no basis of comparison.

When I backup, I use the Joliet FS type, I don't use the UDF file system.
UDF is the write 1 file at a time, like it is a floppy disk type of burning.
I have personally found the UDF writing utilities (DirectCD, InCD) to be a
bit flaky, and unreadable on many systems without the right software.

But stick with basic ISO-9660 file system (or Joliet-what most CD's are) and
it works great. As far as time to burn, I have an older two speed and it
takes about 35min. to burn a whole 650MB disk.

Not that anybody asked, but hard drives are very cheap these days. Adding a
second hard drive is a very easy way to provide redundancy, albeit without
the portability of a CD.
