I think Sharon pretty much hits it on the head. I'm
starting to think that asking questions is the
majority of tech writing.

The trick, however, is finding a person to answer who:

1. Knows what s/he is talking about
2. Has the authority to make decisions about the
subject
3. Can be found to answer the question
4. Is willing to put up with repeated questions. Any
genuine SME who loves what she or he does should be
patient and happy to answer a question for you.
