I am a Canadian who travels two days per week to the U.S. on a contract. I
obtained a TN visa fairly readily, although I had to provide a few
prerequisites, the most important of which was a letter from my client. You
must also show proof that you have a degree (in any field) and that you have
three years of working experience.
"Technical Writer" is on the short list of about 20 occupations in demand in
the U.S. This list is available at most customs offices. I've found that no
matter what I'm doing in the U.S., if I say I'm a technical writer, it's
easy to get a TN visa, and with a TN visa, you're pretty much waved through
at the border.
By the way, if you are going to the U.S. on business, NEVER say you are
working! You may as well turn around and come back home. I always say I'm on
a sales trip, at least until I get the TN visa.
Good luck!
