The FrameMaker beta is very popular, but no one knows if it will
result in a finished product. It's proprietary, too, of course.
A lot of free software stuff is done with some flavor of LaTeX.
Chilliware is supposed to have a help authoring tool for Linux due
out this week, but I haven't seen it yet.
Also, now that KDE2 is out, Kword might be worth having a look at.
The developers specifically warned that, during the beta phase,
backwards compatibility couldn't be assured, but I assume that this
statement no longer applies.
