Andrew is right. We use this feature almost daily on nearly a dozen different books between 20 and 270 pages. We use Word 2000 and Acrobat 4.05 (4.05a?).
I wrote earlier today about an "interdocument links" option--it's actually "cross-document links." But what it really means is "links *within* this document," and it works perfectly.
(By the way, I haven't seen the problem with punctuation marks that Andrew mentioned.)
