I doubt that. Better has nothing to do with it. There are a large
number of writers with much more skill than me. I'd guess that there
are hundreds of them just on this list. I think approach is more the
reason.
I walk into an appointment, there is absolutely no question in my
mind that I can do what they want...and I may not even know what it
is they want yet. OTOH, I have done some prequalification on what
they are looking for, in general...I wouldn't walk in to a position
that required writing documentation from C++ code.
How do I know this? Because I believe that I can do anything in tech
writing that anyone else can do...if I can't when I walk in, I will
learn enough about it to start being productive in a short period of
time, then will improve as I go along. (I got my first job in sales
by, when asked if I knew anything about microfilm, I said "No, but in
six months I'll know more than you do." I was hired on the spot and
six months later, he told me I did.)
Maybe this self assurance rubs off and maybe having had 15 years of
sales where you are selling yourself three times every day didn't
hurt.
Oh, BYW...I haven't been wrong "yet"
