If your contractor has used DRAW version 6, then there are going to be a
number of areas where 9 will create "friction." Another thing to consider is
that it is possible that this contractor had only a passing acquaintance
with DRAW 6. Even if he/she was a master, since it has been a number of
years there is obviously going to be a learning curve.
One way to reduce the learning curve is to remap the keyboard short cuts to
the Version 6 standards. Or, if the contractor prefers, to the standard
keyboard shortcuts of their preferred tool. This is easy to do, and can be a
boon to those who find themselves (as I often do) using the shortcuts from a
favorite tool in the wrong program.
I would avoid allowing an outside contractor to choose the tool they use on
site. Especially if it is not particularly compatible with what you're using
now. This person needs to use the tools you specify. Tool complaints are
often an excuse for sloth (Mr. Plato and I might argue). The particular tool
doesn't make or break a project. Perhaps your contractor needs a dose of
Andrew's infamous "Get back to work, you!"
