Reference book publishers solve this by having the index independent of the
individual
volumes when going to print, and also by only updating the entire index on a
schedule.

For example, 1.0 contains all the latest indexes in all the individual
titles, but, when only the programmers' guide is updated in 1.1, only the
programmers' guide contains the most up-to-date index.

Of course, an online shared index can be updated regularly.
