Andrew, I agree with you a lot, but not this time.
IMO, you don't teach someone by setting them up for
failure. You teach them by setting them up for success
and providing controls along the way to catch and
correct the mistakes.

I have someone at my place of work who was smart, but
lacking in experience and confidence. I sized the work
to meet her ability and she's blossomed tremendously.
She wouldn't have done so if I'd just tossed her in
the deep end and come back to check with her a couple
of times a week.

I think you need to take someone where they are and
build, rather than scaring the crap out of them and
making them grind it out. Of course, sometimes you
don't have the choice...
