Recently I have noticed several pieces on magazines and newspapers on the
soon-to-be-profound effective of the recent wave of immigration to the US.
At the present rate it will be only a few years more when 25% of the US
population will be made up of immigrants and first-generation, and, unlike
prior generations, more recent immigrants (the last 15 years or so) are
choosing to maintain their original culture and language as their primary
way of living.
So there already are or soon will be many benefits to having at least a
beginning conversational knowledge of a second or third language for almost
any worker not just tech writers.
For starters, tech writers with even a beginning knowledge of a second
langage or two can produce documentation better prepared for translation.
In the longer term, it can't hurt employability as the global economy
evolves and the world increasingly demands less English-centric products.
