Attaching Templates to Word Documents WAS RE: Re Word/Weird

There is one thing you might want to try. We recently discovered this, ahem,
feature when standardizing 1600 pages of user documentation using one new
template. (All of the original documents were in Word)
Rather than inserting the old document into the new template, try attaching
the template to your existing document.
Tools > Templates and Add-ins
You get the template and add-ins dialog box
Under Document Template, click on Attach...
You get the attach template dialog box
Locate the template you want to apply to the document, select it and click
on Open
This takes you back to the Template and Add-ins Dialog Box
Click on the box next to Automatically update document styles to select it
Click on OK
If the document that you are attaching this to uses styles, they should
update to the new template styles.
I've been wanting to document this "feature" for a couple of weeks now, and
you gave the excuse to do so!
Thanks!
Jhan

I just spent the entire #$ -at- !$&* day wrestling with that *&#$ware. I give up.
I give UP. Yes, Bill, you've said it remarkably well. This @#^(*$ -at- *ware is
something else. Footers are such fun, what with disappearing and reappearing
page numbers and other fields. Particularly delightful is inserting an
existing document into your brand spanking new template that works
marginally well when you're writing a new document. All day I wrestled with
the #!% thing. In some cases, an existing document can be successfully
inserted into a new document created with the new template. In others, like
the one today (which came from a writer who got fed up with trying to get it
to work) nothing -- and I mean nothing -- works. By 4 o'clock today, I
managed to get the footers to work, but then the $ -at- ^$@ thing started
removing odd-page section breaks unbidden.
My next suggestion to my supervisor is that writers having existing
documents needing to be put into the new template should either type the
book again or hire someone to do it. What a waste -- but I'm not going to
spend more than an hour or two in the future trying to tame this
anti-American piece of shit.
