The market for tech writers in Tucson is steadily growing. High-tech
companies are continually moving here, starting up here, and opening
branches here. Wages are generally lower in Tucson than in Phoenix (that's
what's attracting the companies, I'm sure) but I've been finding more
exceptions.
The pay for senior tech writers ranges from the high 40s to the mid-60s (I
know this figure exists). It's getting easier to get hired at $50K and
higher. I don't think there is currently enough contract writing available
to make a steady living. But I believe this will be changing.
Employers are complaining that they're having a hard time finding good,
experienced candidates. That's one reason why the wages are coming up -- to
attract better people.
It's a beautiful place to live. I wouldn't move to Phoenix for any amount of
money. This place is still like a small town in many ways -- slow movin',
mellow. Great hiking. Alternate climate available in nearby mountains. It
has enough "city stuff" to suit me, too. And an excellent university.

I've just visited in Tucson, but I really liked the atmosphere there. It is
high desert and beautiful in a sparse way. Much more picturesque and
less clogged than in Phoenix. My guess, however, is that
the market for writers is mostly in Phoenix. Any comments from the
Arizona residents?
