You are probably looking for the US Patent and Trademark Office web site.
You can find it at:

http://www.uspto.gov/

Follow the teeny little links at the bottom of the page to Trademarks, or to
Copyrights (LOC), if that's what you need.

Subject: trademarks

Long ago and far away I watched my (then) documentation manager look
up a
site on the Web and report back to me that a particular name was or
wasn't
"taken."

I also think the site specified if the name was TM'ed or (c)'ed or
whatever.

Would anybody know the address of said site?
