Ouch! Take a look at HTML Indexer for a significant boost in indexing productivity.
It provides a dedicated indexing environment in which to create and maintain the entries, saves you from typing (and occasionally mistyping) URLs, then builds the .xml and .jhm files for you when you're finished--along with a nicely formatted "back of the book" index you can include in your JavaHelp file for folks who might prefer themm.
