I agree with previous respondents that prospects seem dim
if you move together with the technical-writing department,
and in R&D you'll be doing work that you don't much like for
a company that isn't well organized. But one point in favor
of staying in R&D, if you can tolerate it, is advancement.
There is only so far you can advance as a technical writer,
whereas R&D puts you in the high-tech career mainstream.
Not every company gives its technical writers the opportunity
to break out.
