I had a similar problem when moving from Word 6 to 7. It has to do with my
graphics card and the "clear" color used in the buttons.
Some mis-match between my card and those of my cohorts and the button-image
editing applet causes the clear parts of the image to look clear in the
applet, but not in the toolbar, or in my toolbar, but not in my coworker's
toolbar, etc., etc.
The only resolution that worked for me was to redo all the buttons,
replacing the clear areas with light gray, hoping that everyone would use a
standard Windows color scheme.
