Peter Drucker observed that there are three models of teams which he
characterized as baseball, football, and tennis doubles.
In a baseball team each player has a specialized role which he performs
largely independantly of how well other people perform their roles. You can
win a golden glove on the worst team in the league.
In a football team each person has a distinct role, but they depend on one
another to a high degree. No one can perform well if the team does not
perform well.
In a tennis doubles team, the players depend on each other, but they do not
have clearly dictinct roles. Each must be able to step in as occasion
demands and fill any role.
I believe his point was that you have to know which type of team you need
for the job at hand and hire and manage accordingly. If you get them
confused, you will likely have a disaster on your hands.
