Atticus:

In the case where you can either type the value directly or specify it by
operating a control, how about "specify" which non-commitally leaves the
method up to the user. In the case of drop-down lists, you can only specify
the value by selecting from the range presented to you, so "select" or
"choose" would be applicable.
