I second Lydia Wong's advice:

>> Run, don't walk, and get a copy of "The Windows Interface Guidelines for
Software Design" from Microsoft Press. <<

I also recommend _The GUI Style Guide_ by Fowler and Stanwick (ISBN
0-12-263590-6). It summarizes various standard GUIs which gives you
perspective on the common elements and differences. It also discusses
principles and challenges involved in creating interfaces for your own
products.
