Maybe this is too obvious, but I just use ALT-Pprint Screen and paste it
into Corel Photo-Paint.
(actually, use New From Clipboard)
Then can do what you need with color depth, etc.
For some screen shots of a DOS-based software (Black screen with light text)
I used INVERT to give me a white screen with dark text.
